Boxer set to groom young rural dwellers in Enugu State

Enugu, March 1, 2017. (TNE): Former lightweight boxer Ikechukwu Okoronkwo says he is set to promote the sport among young rural dwellers in Enugu State.

Already, Okoronkwo has undertaken a tour of the local government areas to sensitise students of secondary schools to the game with a large number of the students showing interest.

Under the sponsorship of the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Chief Edward Ubosi, the boxer targets under-17 boys and girls for training into stardom.

Speaking with The Nigerian Expression in Enugu on Wednesday, Okoronkwo said he had covered a lot of grounds in identifying potential boxers in the state.

He said that his style was to gather students from different schools for lectures and training in the art of boxing.

“We have seen thousands of students who are interested in boxing and many of them are showing prospects for good performance.

“We have a target to get boxers who can represent the state at national and international competitions and we are working to achieve that target in record time.

“As we go, we will whittle down the number so that we can manage the boxers more efficiently. We don’t intend to disappoint the Speaker in this assignment,” Okoronkwo said.

He said that a state-wide competition would be organised in future to pick the best boxers for more training and grooming.

“My target is the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo and I am promising Nigeria that my boxers from this exercise will be there to win medals. It is a promise,” he said. (TNE)
