Lagos, March 1, 2017.(TNE): The British Council Nigeria has expressed its continuous support to the development of the arts industry in Nigeria in view of its immense potential.
Ms. Connie Price, Director of the council made the remarks in Lagos during the 2017 Lagos Theatre Festival with the theme: “Rhythm of the City.”
She said that as part of its effort to ensure the continuous sustenance of the arts, the council founded the Lagos Theatre Festival in 2013.
“This was done as part of our ambitions of fostering exchange and collaboration between Nigerian and British artists through the presentation of high quality Nigerian and British theatre,” she said.
According to Price, one of the hallmarks of the festival has been to promote theatre in unconventional space.
”This has enabled theatre makers and producers to expand their practice beyond traditional theatre spaces by creating work that responds to any given space,” she said.
The director said that the festival grew from presenting four companies in 2013 to 35 companies in 2016, acknowledging the support of First Bank through its Art Programmes.
Price said that the festival which would be exciting, has been designed to increase access to the arts by building new audiences for the arts and culture. (TNE)
