Uyo, Feb. 28, 2017. (TNE): The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested 301 suspected drug offenders and seized 405.2 kg of hard drugs in Akwa Ibom in 2016, an official of the agency has confirmed.
The spokesman of the agency in the state, Maria Ilugbuhi, said that the seizures included cocaine, heroin, cannabis sativa and other psychotropic substances, while 15 of the offenders had been tried and convicted.
According to her, the command also arrested 37 suspects and confiscated 43.76 kg of hard drugs in the last one month.
Ilugbuhi said that the Drug Demand Reduction Unit of the agency counseled and rehabilitated some addicts who have been reunited with their families.
She expressed dismay over the high prevalence of cocaine and combined substance usage in Uyo, the state capital.
The NDLEA official advised those involved to desist to avoid destroying their lives due to the harmful effects of hard drugs, as well as to avoid spending their lives in prison.
She also urged members of the public to volunteer information on hard drug dealers and users. (TNE)
