Kogi to receive 2.2m insecticide treated mosquito nets, says official

Lokoja, March 7, 2017 (TNE): As part of efforts to eliminate malaria, 2.2 million insecticidal mosquito bed nets are to be distributed to mothers and children in the 21 LGAs of Kogi.

The team leader of the Presidential Malaria Initiative, Mr Godwin Aidemagbon who stated this on Tuesday in Lokoja, said that distribution would start on April 20.

According to him, the Kogi Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the  US Ambassador to Nigeria and the Mission Director of USAID, will witness the commencement of the distribution.

The team leader who was in Lokoja to inaugurate Coordinating Campaign Network for the long lasting insecticidal nets, said that all the nets were already on ground.

This time around, a household will be entitled to only one net, as against two that were given out previously.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Saka Audu, restated the determination of the government to eliminate malaria.

He attributed malaria widespread to the many rivers that abound in the state, providing a breeding site for mosquitoes.

Saka said that although the net ownership rate in the state rose from 4 per cent to 64 per cent in 2013,  a lot still needed to be done to curb the spread of malaria.(TNE)
