Curator wants Ajayi Crowther’s works upgraded

Lokoja, March 8, 2017 (TNE): The Curator of the National Museum in Lokoja, Mr Solomon Ibejigba has appealed to stakeholders to upgrade to a global standard, the works and activities of the late Bishop Ajayi Crowther.
Ibejigba, who named the Anglican Church of Nigeria and the 19 Northern state governments as prominent stakeholders who should spearhead the crusade, said that such could be achieved through the establishment of a memorial museum for Crowther.
”His person, status and roles deserve a comprehensive memorial museum that will showcase all his activities, challenges and successes,” Ibejigba said.Crowther was the first black African to be ordained Bishop by the Anglican Church. He hailed from Osoogun village in Iseyin Local Government area of Oyo State in the South Western Nigeria.

The curator said that his role as the architect, builder and pioneer of education in Northern Nigeria should not be overlooked.

”A university of national and global standard should be built in Lokoja with some faculties of the university established in Oyo,” he said.

He urged the Anglican Church, Nigeria Communion, to renovate the first Northern branch of the church located in Gbobe in Bassa Local Government Area of Kogi.”The first Christian convert and baptismal took place in Gbobe; the church is long neglected and deserves national recognition .

”Promotion of tourism as an alternative revenue generation cannot be complete without the recognition and upgrading of the various dynamic and fruitful roles of Bishop Ajayi Crowther in Lokoja and its environs.

”The onus lies on Kogi State Government and the Anglican Communion to pursue this laudable goal for national benefits,” Ibejigba stated.

The late Crowther was born in 1809, at Osoogun in Iseyin LGA of Oyo State. He was the first black African to be ordained a bishop by the Anglican Church.
Among his major missionary works is the translation of the English Bible to Yoruba and was instrumental to the
translation of the Bible to Igbo.
He died on Dec. 31, 1891 and was buried in his hometown. (TNE)
