2017 U-17 FIFA WC: Mali becomes first African country to reach the second round

New Delhi, India, Oct. 12, 2017 (TNE) Mali, the runners up at the 2015 FIFA under-17 world cup, on Thursday showed why they are African champions, dismissing New Zealand 3-1 to zoom into the second round of the current 2017 Championship in India.

In their Day 3, Group B match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, the Malians went 2 goals up in the first 50 minutes before the Junior Kiwis reduced the tally but still conceded a third goal.

The Malian goal scorers were Salam Gidou in the 18th minute, Djemoussa Traore in the 50th and Lassana Ndiaye in the 82nd minute.

New Zealand scored their lone goal through Charles Spragg in the 72nd minute.

The Malians finished in Group B with 6 points behind Paraguay which won the group with 9 points. Turkey and New Zealand are therefore eliminated from further contention.

With one more group match to go, Ghana is in third place in Group A, Guinea at the bottom of the table in Group C, and Niger in third place in Group D.
