Port Harcourt, Feb. 10, 2018 (TNE) Egypt is leading the medals table at the on-going African Wrestling Championship, tagged “Port Harcourt 2018”.
The Egyptians have won 13 Gold, 10 Silver and 3 Bronze medals. Host, Nigeria is second with 12 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze medals, Algeria is third with 9 gold, 9 silver and 4 bronze medals.
Tunisia is fourth with 9 gold, 9 silver and 2 bronze medals while South Africa is fifth with 4 gold, 6 silver and 6 bronze medals.
Daniel Igali, the President of the Nigerian Wrestling Federation, said team Nigeria have learnt positive lessons from the tournament.
He told The Nigerian Expression (TNE) on Saturday that Nigerian wrestlers have done well in the championship.
“Our athletes have surpassed the target set for them. Already, Some of them have qualified to represent the country in the Commonwealth Games, scheduled for Australia in April.
“We are aware of the strength of the North Africans in the game. Our athletes have given good account of themselves. This is the first time some of them are taking part in a championship and they won medals,” he said.
Igali said that the federation will continue to work on the team after the championship in which 34 African countries are participating. It will end on Feb. 11.
